What ChatGPT thinks about the future of capital markets

For decades, proponents of AI have been promising unimaginable riches and upgrades, painting a vision of the future where we sit around drinking pina coladas whilst robots drive our cars, mow our lawns and do our work. So far, it’s fair to say, most of what AI has achieved has felt a little superfluous and, perhaps, a touch underwhelming.

But this week we were reminded of its immense potential when ChatGPT went viral, sparking worry and wonder in equal measure. In short, the ChatGPT system is the latest evolution of the GPT family of text-generating AIs. According to the NY Times, it is the best AI chatbot ever.

So, this week for the Origin blog, I couldn’t help myself – I had to put ChatGPT to the test. Using the prompt below, we gained a blog post, which it took all of about 5 seconds to write!

Fad or fantastic? Whatever you think, I’d be fascinated to hear your thoughts on its effort compared to our regular thought leadership and what this might mean for the future of AI.

Origin’s Prompt

“We are a fintech startup in London that builds software helping digitise the process for primary bond issuance in the debt capital markets. Our customers include 21 major investment banks and over 100 frequent borrowers from all around the world. We send out a weekly blog post talking about interesting developments in the realms of finance and technology. Please write an 800 word blog post about ChatGPT, the Open AI project, and how artificial intelligence could influence the capital markets in the future that we can use for this week's blog.”

ChatGPT’s Blog Post

One of the most exciting developments in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) is the ChatGPT project from OpenAI. ChatGPT is a cutting-edge AI language model that has the ability to generate human-like text based on a given prompt. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the way that we communicate and share information, and it could also have a significant impact on the capital markets.

In the world of finance, the ability to quickly and accurately generate reports and analysis is crucial. Traditionally, this has been a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, involving teams of analysts and researchers working together to compile data and interpret it. With ChatGPT, however, this process could be significantly streamlined.

By providing ChatGPT with a prompt and relevant data, it is possible to generate detailed reports and analysis in a matter of minutes. This could be a game-changer for the primary bond issuance process, allowing investment banks to quickly assess the potential risks and rewards of issuing a bond. It could also help to improve the accuracy of these reports, as ChatGPT is able to draw on a vast amount of data and generate text that is almost indistinguishable from human-written content.

Another potential benefit of ChatGPT in the capital markets is its ability to facilitate communication and collaboration between different teams and departments. By using ChatGPT to generate reports and analysis, it is possible to create a shared, up-to-date view of the market that can be accessed by all relevant stakeholders. This could help to improve decision-making and coordination within the organization, and could ultimately lead to more successful bond issuances.

Of course, there are also potential challenges and concerns associated with the use of ChatGPT in the capital markets. One of the biggest concerns is the issue of transparency and accountability. With ChatGPT making decisions based on complex algorithms, it can be difficult for humans to understand how those decisions are being made. This can raise questions about accountability and trust in the financial system.

Another potential challenge is the issue of bias in AI algorithms. If the data used to train ChatGPT is biased, the resulting decisions made by the AI could also be biased. This could lead to unfair treatment of certain investors or issuers, and could potentially lead to legal issues.

Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of ChatGPT in the capital markets are too great to ignore. As AI technology continues to advance, we can expect to see more and more organizations adopting ChatGPT and other AI language models in their operations. In the future, ChatGPT could play a crucial role in the primary bond issuance process, helping to improve efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration within the financial industry.
